Finland clinches quarterfinal spot at Worlds

Jussi Jokinen scored a pair of goals and Petteri Nummelin added a goal and two assists for the Finns, who can earn the top spot in Group E with a regulation win over Russia on Tuesday. The Russians are undefeated in the tournament and need only a point to secure the top seed.

Vladimir Mihalik and Tomas Tatar scored for Slovakia, which can still earn a quarterfinal berth Tuesday with a win over Germany.

After a scoreless first period, Finland scored three times in a span of just over four minutes to take control. Jokinen capped the quick burst with his first goal of the contest.

Pekka Rinne made 27 saves in the victory.

In Group F, Norway concluded its qualifying round play with a 3-2 win over Switzerland to remain alive for a quarterfinal berth. The Norwegians were blitzed by a combined score of 17-1 in losses to Canada and Latvia in their most recent games and would have been eliminated Monday with a loss or even an overtime win.

Switzerland, which outshot Norway 45-15, has already earned a berth in the quarterfinals and will play its final qualifying round game on Tuesday against Sweden. The winner will claim first place in Group F.

Brandon Roy Favorite to Win 2007 NBA Rookie of the Year

So far, Foye has averaged 9 PPG and 2.4 assists in just under 21 minutes per game. With his new role of starter, Foye’s numbers will definitely increase. In his first game as the new starting guard this past Sunday, Foye had 10 points; five rebounds and 8 assists. More importantly, he logged 34 minutes of playing time; his third highest run of the season.

Adam Morrison, of the Charlotte Bobcats, was the favorite early on in the season after averaging 15+ PPG through the first month of the season. Ever since his torrid start, Morrison’s point production has declined each month. This really isn’t surprising, considering at 6’8” he only weighs 205 lbs. Obviously he will need to hit the weights big time during the off-season in order to keep from breaking down in the future.
