The 60-year-old Piraro compiled a major college coaching record of 806-632-6, all at San Jose State starting with the 1987 season. He's the winningest coach in school history.

Piraro's teams have had 18 winning seasons. San Jose State won Western Athletic Conference championships in 1997, 2000 and 2009. The Spartans earned NCAA Baseball Tournament berths in 2000 and 2002 and advanced to the College World Series for the first time in 2000.

Associate head coach Mark O'Brien will serve as the interim head coach while a national search is conducted for a new coach.
